SiC-laminated

SiC-coated: Wet-grinding paper with a film backing

SiC-laminated is our dimensionally stable premium solution for metallographic preparation using wet grinding. The sharp silicon carbide grain structure on a dimensionally stable film backing ensures high stock removal, clean scratch patterns and excellent flatness – from the initial rough grinding right through to the fine finish. The result: reproducible surfaces that reliably support the subsequent polishing process.

Why a film backing?

  • Dimensionally stable and flat: the PET film backing retains its dimensions even under water pressure. This ensures uniform contact conditions and reduces edge effects.
  • Water-resistant and durable: compared to paper, film is less sensitive to moisture – ensuring consistent performance over a longer service life.
  • Consistent scratch pattern: Uniform grit distribution and a defined bond ensure reproducible sanding patterns and smooth transitions to the polishing stage.

Suitable materials

For non-ferrous metals, steels, plastics and fibre composites (CFRP/GRP), SiC is the first choice for wet grinding. For hard/brittle materials that produce short chips (e.g. hard metals, ceramics, glass, mineralogical samples), we recommend diamond grinding discs.

Sizes, grit sizes and availability

  • Diameter: Ø 250 mm from stock; Ø 300 mm on request (subject to minimum order quantity).
  • Grit size range (typical): P80–P5000 – for the entire process from rough grinding to fine grinding. Very fine grades are available, depending on the manufacturer.
  • Manufacturer quality: We stock brands including Hermes and Starcke – for narrow grit ranges, high coating quality and reliable batch-to-batch performance.

Assembly and system compatibility

  • Magnetic systems/backing discs: SiC-coated discs can be used efficiently on Gecco discs or MD-Fix. Changing between grit sizes takes just seconds – ideal for batch preparations.
  • Alternative mounting options: Clamping solutions are tried and tested in practice.

Practical guide (short workflow)

  1. Preliminary grinding (P80–P180): Rapid flat grinding, removal of saw marks.
  2. Intermediate grinding (P240–P600): Homogenisation, reduction of grinding marks.
  3. Fine grinding (P800–P1200/finer): Uniform, polishable surface as a basis for the final polish.
Notes: Select grit sizes such that the previous sanding pattern is completely removed. The following grit sizes are the industry standard: P80, P180, P320, P600, P1200 – optionally P2500 and P5000. Work with sufficient cooling water and moderate contact pressure. (In accordance with recognised
    preparation guidelines.)

Quality, reproducibility, cost-effectiveness

  • Reproducible results: A stable backing, uniform grain distribution and a defined coating ensure consistent surfaces for hardness testing, light microscopy and SEM.
  • Long service life: The film backing withstands moisture and mechanical stress better than paper – ensuring predictable maintenance intervals and reliable processes.
  • Brand expertise: With Hermes and Starcke, you can rely on proven industrial quality ‘Made in Germany’.
