SiC Abrasive Paper, self-adhesive
Self-adhesive SiC grinding paper – Wet grinding with clear takt
Reproducible surfaces: defined bonding, consistent grit distribution
- Sizes Ø 200/250/300 mm, grits P120–P1200; finer up to P2400/P4000
- Ideal for non-ferrous metals, steel grades, plastics, CFRP/GFRP
- Industrial quality: Hermes, Starcke, FEPA-P compliant
- Changeover note: PSA is particularly suitable for lower annual consumption
What is the advantage of self-adhesive SiC?
Self-adhesive SiC wet grinding paper (PSA) enables clean, stable fixation on the platen without additional tools. It is valued by users with lower annual consumption who prefer simple inventory management and robust process reliability.
Setup time compared: paper, film, self-adhesive
-
SiC with paper backing (non-adhesive) – shortest changeover time
- Change: remove sheet, place/fix new sheet (e.g., clamp ring, double-sided adhesive film, spray adhesive).
- Advantage: very fast sheet changes; no removal of strong PSA layers.
-
SiC with film backing – short changeover, high dimensional stability
- Change: peel/place film sheets; the rigid backing centers more easily and bubble-free.
- Advantage: flatness, reproducible contact conditions; good balance between speed and stability.
-
Self-adhesive SiC (PSA) – longer changeover time for swaps
- Steps: remove liner, apply sheet bubble-free (recommended: rubber pressure roller). For changes, peel off firmly; remove any adhesive residue with ethanol.
- Time: approx. 30 seconds per change plus occasional cleaning.
- Recommendation: optimal for users without high annual consumption and with a focus on secure, durable adhesion per sheet.
Applications
- Macro-etch preparation of welds
- Non-ferrous metals (Al, Cu alloys), steel grades (structural/stainless, high-alloy Cr-Ni steel, tool steel up to ~60 HRC)
- Plastics, mounting compounds
- Fiber composites (CFRP/GFRP), multilayer laminates
Note: For very hard/brittle materials (carbide, ceramics, glass) we recommend diamond discs or film-backed alternatives for higher shape stability.
Dimensions, grits, availability
- Diameters: Ø 200 mm, Ø 250 mm, Ø 300 mm (other sizes on request, e.g., Ø 305 mm)
- Grits (typically available): P120, P180, P320, P400, P600, P800, P1000, P1200; finer: P2400, P4000 depending on version
- Packaging: unit = 100 sheets
Fast movers from stock; ultra-fine grits possibly made to order.
Manufacturers & quality
- Hermes abrasives: consistent grit distribution, wet-grind-resistant bond, clean scratch pattern
- Starcke abrasives: tight grit bands for demanding surfaces
All products FEPA-P compliant, manufactured to high quality standards. [1]
Recommended wet grinding workflow
- Coarse grinding: P120–P180 – reliably remove saw marks/deformation
- Intermediate step: P400 → P600 or P400 → P800 – homogenize roughness pattern
- Fine grinding: P1000 → P1200; optionally P2400/P4000 before polishing
Parameters: 150–400 rpm (Ø 200–300 mm), continuous water flow, moderate pressure. After each step, clean the specimen and platen with tap water and, if necessary, with a paper towel.
Mounting & compatibility
- PSA mounting: remove liner, press the adhesive back onto the platen (aluminum disc) bubble-free using a rubber roller. For changes: peel off firmly; remove any adhesive residue with ethanol.
- Optional: bond PSA paper to a metal backing plate and fix magnetically if setups require high speeds/frequent changes.
- Alternative fixation (non-adhesive): clamp ring, double-sided film, spray adhesive.
Self-adhesive vs. alternatives – decision aid
- Fastest changes: paper backing (non-adhesive)
- Good flatness + short changeover: film backing (SiC on PET)
- Secure adhesion per sheet, simple inventory: self-adhesive (PSA), with extra time per change
Core trade-off: takt (change frequency) vs. flatness/tool life and annual consumption.

FAQ
- Reuse? No, PSA is single-use – adhesion decreases after wet use.
- Speed? 150–400 rpm (depending on material and grit); follow the machine’s instructions.
- Dry grinding? Not recommended – wet grinding provides cooling and clears the grit. Chips are flushed away.
- Preparation for hardness testing? P1200 as standard; finer depending on test requirements.
- Preparation recommendations are available on our website.
